A Note from Clark
Friends,
This month my boat insurance is due for renewal. My boat is an older Sabre, and though I’ve spent tons of money to make Roam beautiful, seaworthy, and trouble-free, I discovered that to the insurance companies she’s just an old boat, priced accordingly. To make matters worse, in my experience insurance companies are doing everything they can to avoid paying claims. Dealing with them always puts me in a bad mood, and I have learned to counter my frustration by digging into the insurance industry and making sure I’m prepared for the worst. So I’ve dedicated this month’s newsletter to understanding yacht insurance, the companies we have to work with, and how to be prepared for a possible accident and claim. Feel free to reach out if you’re confused, or want a shoulder to cry on! Happy insuring!
Fair winds,
Clark

Buying and Insuring an Older Boat. Age drives boat insurance: survey frequency, haul-out conditions, even whether a carrier will write her at all. What to check before you go under contract.
Is Your Yacht Insurance Policy Just False Security?. You paid the premium, so you assume you are covered. A wave of recent cases says otherwise. Marine insurers are voiding policies over expired fire extinguisher tags, missed surveys, and warranty fine print, sometimes for losses the equipment had nothing to do with. Here is how it happens and what a yacht owner should actually do about it.
How to Get Competitive Boat Insurance Bids. Three quotes is not three quotes if the agents worked from different facts. How to run a real marine insurance bid, and what to compare besides premium.
How to Vet a Marine Insurance Company. Not every marine insurer is backed the same way. How to check a carrier’s rating, licensing, and claims record before you hand over a premium check.
